About the Senior Hardware Systems Engineering position

Our Senior Hardware Systems Engineers are key members of Avidyne’s Hardware Engineering team, a multidisciplinary, tight-knit group of engineers and technicians who develop, certify, and support our next generation of airborne sensors, displays, and flight management systems.

The Senior Hardware Systems Engineer is primarily responsible for defining and capturing hardware system features, functions, and interfaces as well as guiding our avionics projects through their developmental and certification processes. Routine tasks include writing hardware specifications, requirements, and test procedures and ensuring our products satisfy customer, regulatory, and internal requirements.

Secondary responsibilities include mentoring interns and co-op students, coordinating design reviews, and interfacing with customers, FAA certification authorities and other key stakeholders.

Our Senior Hardware Systems Engineer’s responsibilities include:

  • Converting knowledge of various technical standards into system requirements and test plans
  • Lead the definition and capture of certification and compliance requirements
  • Lead the development effort through all phases of a formal software and hardware development lifecycle via Avidyne’s internal processes, DO-178B, and DO-254 as required
  • Participating in design reviews leading to well-developed test plans and procedures
  • Performing verification tests, and authoring and releasing verification reports
  • Ensuring Avidyne’s products satisfy customer, regulatory, and internal requirements
  • Completing System Safety Assessments (SSA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Reliability Predictions per FAA guidance and industry or military standards
  • Tracing System Requirements to Hardware Component requirements as well as Verification Test Cases back to their respective requirements to ensure complete system verification
  • Managing System Engineering and Verification Document Tree
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with customers, FAA certification authorities, and other invested parties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Ability and willingness to mentor others and work effectively in a team-oriented environment
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal and written communication (including technical documentation)
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently as well as within a team environment
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities, moving deadlines, evolving requirements, and changing focus
  • Ability to successfully identify and resolve complex problems
  • Knowledge of systems and test engineering principles
  • Knowledge of requirements development and management
  • Knowledge and demonstrated ability with Microsoft Office suite of products.

Education & Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in Systems, Computer, Aerospace, Math, Physics, or another Engineering discipline
  • At least 5 years industry experience with systems engineering, requirements development, requirements management, and related tools (e.g., DOORS), or a Master’s degree in a related field of study plus 3 years of similar industry experience.

Other Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Master’s degree from ABET accredited program or other formal training in Systems Engineering
  • Knowledge and/or experience with aircraft avionics systems
  • Knowledge and/or prior experience with CFR 14 Part 23, 25, 27, or 29 aircraft
  • Knowledge and/or prior experience with commercial avionics standards and processes such as RTCA/DO-178C, TRCA/DO-254, and AC 23.1209-1E
  • Knowledge and familiarity with FAA TSO, STC, ASTM, and/or TC processes
  • Prior experience with DOORS requirements management software
  • Knowledge and familiarity with DO-160 environmental qualifications including HIRF/lightning
  • A mastery of working within the System Engineering “V”
  • Pilot's license, flight training, or familiarity with general aviation.
